Detailed 10 Days Rwenzori Mountaineering, Wildlife watching & Chimpanzee trekking
Day 1 – Kampala to Rwenzori Mountains
You will be picked up from Kampala early in the morning and driven west through the beautiful countryside of Uganda to the renowned Rwenzori Mountains, often known as the Mountains of the Moon in the Rwenzori Mountains National Park. Before the ragged Rwenzori peaks rise abruptly ahead, the path goes through small towns, crater lakes, tea plantations, and more.
You will be met in Nyakalengija, the trekking headquarters at an altitude of 1,650 meters, upon arrival. Here, you will get a thorough briefing and equipment check with your mountain guides and porters.
Day 2 – Nyakalengija (1,650m) to Nyabitaba Camp (2,650m)
The journey starts in the Afro-montane woodland zone, following the Mahoma River. A primeval feeling is created as the road progressively ascends beneath tall forest trees covered in lichen and moss.
There are lots of birds, and you might see black-and-white colobus monkeys and blue monkeys scuttling through the trees. As the forest gradually thins with elevation, wooden bridges span rushing streams.
You arrive at Nyabitaba Camp (2,650m), which is situated on a ridge with expansive views of the valley below, after five to six hours of hiking. You will spend the night at Nyabitaba Camp for the night
Day 3 – Nyabitaba Camp (2,650m) to John Matte Camp (3,505m)
The trail briefly descends after leaving Nyabitaba and then crosses the raging Bujuku River on the Kurt Shafer Bridge. Before entering the gigantic heather zone, there is a difficult ascent through a dense bamboo forest.
Under enormous moss-covered heather trees with hanging lichen, the trail continues upstream, passing through wetlands and verdant valleys. The vegetation gets more and more alpine. You reach John Matte Camp (3,505m), which is situated in a broad valley encircled by tall peaks and lush flora. You will spend the night at Camp, John Matte
Day 4 – John Matte Camp (3,505m) to Bujuku Camp (3,900m)
The well-known Bigo Bog, a high-altitude marsh traversed by wooden boardwalks, is part of today’s hike. This distinctive alpine scene is characterized by massive lobelias, enduring blooms, and dense moss.
The peaks of Mount Stanley, Mount Baker, and Mount Speke rise dramatically above the valley floor as you ascend into the Upper Bujuku Valley.
You arrive at Bujuku Camp (3,900m), which is exquisitely situated beneath the majestic cliffs of Mount Stanley, between alpine lakes. You will spend the night at Camp Bujuku
Day 5 – Bujuku Camp (3,900m) to Elena Hut (4,541m)
The trail from Bujuku Camp to Scott Elliot Pass goes up through rocky alpine country. It is a very difficult hike. The air gets thinner and the scenery more wild and open.
After you cross the pass, you drop just before the last climb to Elena Hut (4,541m). The hut is below the Stanley Glacier. The afternoon is spent resting, drinking water, and preparing for the try to reach the summit. Elena Hut is where you will sleep tonight.
Day 6 – Elena Hut (4,541m) to Cheptegei Peak (4,907m) & Descend to Kitandara Lakes Camp (4,022m)
When you start early in the mountains, you are tied to a rope for the climb. From the edge of the Stanley Glacier, you slowly climb up before heading toward Cheptegei Peak. This part of the journey is a short, easy rock hike, with the main challenge being the high altitude.
At the top of Cheptegei Peak (4,907m), people can see beautiful, wide-ranging views of Uganda and Congo. Alexandra Peak, Mount Speke, the Bujuku Valley, and large glaciers can be seen in the area.
After the summit party, you go down Freshfield Pass to the beautiful Kitandara Lakes Camp (4,022 meters), which is in the middle of deep-blue mountain lakes. You will stay at Kitandara Lakes Camp for the night.
Day 7 – Kitandara Lakes Camp (4,022m) to Guy Yeoman Camp (3,505m)
From Kitandara, the trail slowly ascends before crossing Freshfield Pass and beginning a long descent into the Mubuku valley. The harsh alpine scenery gradually softens into lush flora, dominated by massive groundsels and moss-covered slopes.
Waterfalls cascade down valley sides as the vegetation grows at lower altitudes. You arrive at Guy Yeoman Camp (3,505m), which is set in a protected valley beneath rocky cliffs. You will spend the night at Guy Yeoman Camp
Day 8 – Guy Yeoman Camp (3,505m) to Nyabitaba Camp (2,560m) & Drive to Queen Elizabeth National Park
It’s a lengthy descent through shifting vegetation zones today. Bogs, glacier ridges, and dense montane forest are all along the trail, which is frequented by birds and occasionally by Rwenzori red duiker.
You finish the mountain hike at Nyabitaba Camp (2,560m) and go to Nyakalengija. From there, you enter Queen Elizabeth National Park, where the terrain opens up into wetlands and savannah plains. You will spend the night at Queen Elizabeth NP’s Safari Lodge
Day 9 – Big Five Game Drive & Kazinga Channel Boat Cruise
A game drive in Queen Elizabeth National Park kicks off the morning. Elephants, buffaloes, lions, leopards, and a variety of antelopes and birds are among the animals you might come across.

Take a boat ride around the Kazinga Channel in the afternoon to get up close and personal with hippos, Nile crocodiles, and a variety of birds.
Day 10 – Chimpanzee Tracking in Kalinzu Forest & Transfer to Kampala
You start your trip back to Kampala in the evening. This marks the end of your amazing adventure through Uganda’s woods, mountains, and savannas. After your meal, you go to the Kalinzu Forest Reserve for a guided monkey tracking experience. This forest is full of birds and primates, so you may see colobus monkeys, red-tailed monkeys, and blue monkeys, along with chimps.
