After breakfast, the trek continues into the Bamboo-Mimulopsis Zone, a steep and often muddy section with high natural steps. During the rainy season, this part of the trail can be slippery, but the dense bamboo forest and cool mountain atmosphere make the climb rewarding.

After gaining roughly 551m over 1.8km, you arrive at Kalalama Camp (3,147m), located within the Heather-Rapanea Zone. Here you can pause for tea or coffee before continuing deeper into the mountains.

From Kalalama, the path winds over ridges, small valleys, streams, and moss-covered waterfalls. Giant heather trees line the trail, their branches decorated with long Usnea lichen, often called “old man’s beard.” Mist frequently rolls through the valley, creating an almost mystical landscape.

Upon arrival at Mutinda Camp, adventurous hikers may choose to ascend Mutinda Lookout (3,975m). The viewpoint rewards climbers with spectacular panoramas stretching across the Rwenzori range, Kasese town, and even Lake George on clear days. This extra hike also helps with altitude acclimatization for those continuing to higher peaks.

The landscape becomes increasingly dramatic as giant lobelias, everlasting flowers, and thick moss dominate the scenery.

The trail passes through the beautiful Namusangi Valley at 3,840m, a wide alpine basin framed by steep cliffs and waterfalls with impressive views of the Mutinda Peaks. Several bog crossings and rolling climbs eventually lead to Bugata Camp, perched high above Bugata Lake near Bamwanjara Pass.

From camp, hikers enjoy sweeping views over Lake Kopello, Lake Africa, Lake Kanganyika, and the surrounding peaks. On clear days, Weismann’s Peak may be visible in the distance, often dusted with snow.

The region is home to the rare Rwenzori Red Forest Duiker, a unique subspecies found only in these mountains. Bugata Camp offers comfortable facilities including solar lighting, toilets, and washing areas with warm water prepared by the guides.

Today is the highlight of the expedition. The route begins with a traverse above Bugata Lake before circling around to the icy shores of Lake Kopello, where water temperatures average just 2°C.

As the ascent continues, magnificent views unfold across the chain of alpine lakes scattered through the valley below. The final section to Weismann’s Peak involves steep rocky terrain that may require ropes when snow or ice is present.

5 Days Rwenzori Trekking To Weismann Peak

Standing on the summit of Weismann’s Peak is an unforgettable experience. On clear days, trekkers are rewarded with panoramic views of the legendary Rwenzori giants including Mount Stanley, Mount Speke, and Mount Baker. The summit itself has a rounded, moss-covered appearance that creates a unique and peaceful alpine setting.

Although Stella Peak lies nearby, it requires advanced technical climbing skills and is recommended only for experienced mountaineers.

After celebrating the summit, the descent continues into the Nyamwamba Valley to Kiharo Camp (3,460m). The valley features giant groundsels, mossy forests, crystal-clear streams, and dramatic rocky cliffs. During dry nights, the calls of rock hyrax echo through the mountains above camp.

Destination: Weismann’s Peak: 4,620m and Kiharo Camp – 3,430m

Overnight stay: Kiharo Camp

Day 5: Descending the Nyamwamba Valley to Base Camp

The final day offers one of the most scenic descents in the entire Rwenzori range. The trail follows the spectacular Nyamwamba Valley through dense rainforest, cascading waterfalls, moss-covered rocks, and deep river gorges.

This route remained unexplored for many years due to its rugged terrain. Early explorers, including geologist McConnell in 1937, were unable to pass through the valley. Today, trekkers can enjoy one of the most beautiful sections of the Rwenzori Mountains thanks to carefully established trails.

As you descend, there are frequent opportunities to spot Rwenzori Red Duikers quietly feeding in forest clearings. The trail eventually leads past dramatic waterfalls before crossing a high ridge with incredible valley views.

A lunch stop is usually made at Forest View Camp before completing the final descent back to base camp and Trekkers Hostel — marking the end of an unforgettable five-day journey through Africa’s legendary Mountains of the Moon.
